How Heat Recovery and Ventilation Works

This diagram of a typical heat recovery ventilation system is for illustration purposes only. Thermsaver make every effort to ensure that the information given on this page and the individual specifications pages is accurate, however this information may change as a result of continuing product research and development.

At the heart of the system is a lightweight heat exchanger which recovers over 75% of the heat in the outgoing stale air stream. This heat energy is transferred to the incoming fresh air supply, providing a clean, fresh environment within the building.

Illustration showing the heat recovery ventilation system layout throughout a house

The HRV unit is connected to two sets of ducts.

  • The stale air extraction ducts which carry the contaminated air through the HRV unit, before exhausting to the outside.
  • The supply ducts drawing the clean fresh air from outside through the HRV unit before distributing it through the house.

The two sets of ducts pass each other inside the heat exchanger core, where heat is transferred to the incoming fresh air from the outgoing stale air.

At no point do either air stream mix. Only heat is transferred

With this system your home has a constant and controlled ventilation and air circulation system with, under ideal conditions, the potential for a complete air change every two hours.

Once installed the system is virtually maintenance free - which means that you only need to clean the filters, (incorporated in each of the room grilles), every once in a while to keep the system purring smoothly along. The filters are easily washed in warm water with detergent and can be shaken dry.

You even have two variable speed fan controls, to adjust the intake and extraction systems individually, so that you can turn the ventilation up in your hour of need, such as when you're cooking or showering. An option is now available to incorporate a damper valve in line with the kitchen cooker hood and a boost switch for kitchen extraction.

The controls will allow the heat recovery fan to be isolated during the summer if required.
