Heat Pump Training
With the Renewable Heat Incentive allowing installers to benefit from becoming more environmentally friendly, this will further ensure the decline of traditional heating appliances such as oil and gas boilers. This means that there is a gap in the market left for engineers and indeed Thermsaver to exploit. Engineers should seek to increase their customer base via alternate products such as DeLonghi heat pumps.
The idea of a heat pump is to use the ambient air from outside, either taking from the air or from the ground. The air source variety accounts for approximately 80% of the market, whereas the ground source and geothermal options, account for the other 20% (15% Ground Source, 5% Geothermal), mostly due to their requirement of a large area of ground in which to set up the collecting loop system.
A heat pump is split into two parts, one which is external and one which is internal. The external component collects the air and transports it into the building. The building is heated and supplied with hot water via the internal component and once the process has been completed, the air is transformed back into liquid, ready to start the process again, ensuring maximum renewability.
On the 26th of February 2010, Michael McMahon, a local MSP, unveiled the exciting new Heat Pump training centre at Thermsaver. This centre is dedicated to running a two day course, once a month for motivated and enthusiastic engineers looking to “go green” and expand into the renewable energy market by using the most innovative solutions courtesy of DeLonghi heat pump technology.
The general consensus amongst engineers is that they adopt a “fix or replace” strategy, whereby they either repair the broken article or simply replace it with a new unit, similar to the last device. Thermsaver hope to use Heat Pump training to encourage the engineer to think outside the box and get away from this “fix or replace” mentality.
The idea being that instead of simply replacing something with the same product, they look to offer a new and more environmentally friendly solution. One of the problems with engineers and the lack of expansion of their business is that they are reluctant to try new technology and innovative heating methods, resulting in an outdated skill set, that is not tailored to the current climate.
This means, that when oil fired boilers and fossil fuel powered amenities become obsolete, as they are already on their way to doing so, the engineer will be left with a declining business. The key idea in business is to adapt and change with the ever changing marketplace, or experience drastic loss of custom. The two day training courses are held monthly and will allow applicants to become MCS accredited and approved installer partner and will gain exclusive access to the DeLonghi Partner Hub which is intended to provide a full Technical and Product Support Service to accredited partners.
The first day of the course, which is the product/theory day, will be focused on providing an extensive overview of the products, to the engineers including technical specifications and benefits as well as debunking myths and common misconceptions about the installation and operation of heat pumps. They will also be shown how to effectively market the product and gain a better understanding of how to sell it to their customers, over a conventional oil boiler.
The second day of the course, which is logic training, is more hands on and is situated in the Thermsaver workshop whereby engineers will be given the opportunity to explore the products physically and be instructed in the processes of installing, maintenance and troubleshooting.
If you are an engineer keen to expand or even begin your knowledge of heat pumps and are fully committed to enhancing your business to include new renewable technologies then this course will assist in not only giving you the skills needed to install these appliances but also the know-how in terms of marketing and business development.
