Renewable Heat Incentive

Environmental Issues

Oil is one of the world’s most valuable resources. Its uses are almost infinite, however the supply is not. Currently the world is reliant upon fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas to power vehicles and provide heat. Oil has the advantage of being easily and readily accessible as well as being fairly cheap. However, prices are rising as supplies are falling. The once plentiful quantities of oil have been depleted and we cannot go on draining the world’s oil reserves indefinitely. Scientists say that it is inevitable the supplies will run out within the next century.

Apart from increasing expenditure, upon burning, a powerful greenhouse gas, Carbon Dioxide, is released which seriously damages the planet’s atmosphere with harmful by-products and is a major cause of global warming. Despite oil being most suitable energy source in terms of efficiency it bears environmental issues and that of its non-renewable/recyclable state, leaving us to find a suitable solution.

As for the foreseeable future; will the government and oil companies continue to increase the tax and the price of oil to astronomical amounts in an attempt to milk the last litres for all it is worth? Will they begin working on a long-term, viable solution long before the world supply runs out? Will the whole world collapse when the last drop has been spent?

Ninety percent of the world’s vehicles are powered by oil, but what about heating? Oil and gas fired boilers are fast becoming an outdated concept, making way for new technology such as DeLonghi-Climaventa Heat Pumps, exclusively supplied by Thermsaver, in Scotland.

Introducing the Incentive

Green Economic House

Apart from the obvious environmental and renewable advantages of installing a heat pump, what other benefits can it bring to the user? This is where the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) comes in; a brand new incentive, which comes into play in 2011, will see those home owners and business owners who choose to install a heat pump being rewarded. Going live on June the 1st 2011, the incentive is a new payment being introduced in the UK for generating heat from renewable sources.

So who does this incentive apply to? The answer, in short, is almost everyone, from households to businesses, farmers, hospitals, schools, care-homes or even entire communities wishing to invest collectively in a renewable energy scheme, by which they will distribute the heat and divide the income. For those of you who have already installed a heat pump which is currently producing heat, as long as it was set up after July 15th 2009, it is eligible to make the claim. For those who are thinking about installing a heat pump, why wait? The advantages, unlike oil, are almost infinite and you will be able to claim from June 2011.

So who is paying for this? It was announced on October 20th, within the Spending Review, that the RHI will be paid for directly by the Treasury. The Renewable Heat Incentive resembles the Feed-In Tariffs, yet there are still “important differences due to the fact that pretty much every single property in the UK generates its own heat from a gas or oil boiler. In other words, there is no ‘National Grid for Heat’ and so importing and exporting heat is not relevant and it will be paid for by the Treasury not by energy users.” (RHI, 2010)*

So how do you claim? First of all, you install renewable heat systems in your property, by which then an estimate is made based on how much heat your renewable system will produce, resulting in a fixed amount based on the estimate.

Impact upon Business

So what does this mean for Thermsaver? Thermsaver became Scotland’s exclusive distributor for DeLonghi Heat Pump technology in 2010, as well as successfully opening a training centre, with the help of local MSP Michael McMahon.

This means that Thermsaver cannot only supply high quality DeLonghi branded heat pumps within an estimated two week period, but can also train motivated engineers who are eager to expand their customer base, advance their range of skills and broaden their knowledge on renewable heating methods. At Thermsaver they can become an Approved Installer Partner with access to the exclusive DeLonghi Partner Hub.

Thermsaver are seeking to target homeowners and businesses looking towards renewable heat sources, not only to increase efficiency and become a much admired eco-warrior but to gain a little from the Renewable Heat Incentive along the way.

The Future

With the last barrels of oil being drawn from the sea bed in the next few decades and not being replaced until the much distant future, by which time it will have long been made obsolete thanks to renewable resources and heat energy systems, we can now look to the future by making a worthwhile investment in a heat pump and ensuring that we save money as well as the planet.
