Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pump LayoutThe ground source and geothermal heat pumps differ from the air source heat pump in that instead of collecting the ambient outdoor air from the atmosphere to manufacture heat, it uses the air which it draws from the ground through either a horizontal or vertical system. Whilst these two types of heat pump are similar in the way in which they collect and process the air, the actual layout and physical design of the system is different; a ground source heat pump extracts the air through a horizontal mechanism whereas geothermal pumps seek to use a vertical system.

A heat pump can provide heating during the winter months by drawing heat from the external ground and transforming it to heat the internal environment ensuring a supply of hot water and heating any other appliances. The heat pump can operate more efficiently with heat which is extracted from a warmer source is but typically the heat can be extracted from any source.

During the warmer months, the heat pump can perform the opposite method, by siphoning the warm air from the internal area and pumping it back into the outside loop system. This reverse function of the heat pump uses less energy.

Horizontal

The ground source variant, which accounts for the largest percentage of sales in the ground heat pump market, employs a horizontal collecting system which is placed at approximately 1.2 metres from the ground’s surface. The heat pump uses shallow ground, therefore reaping benefits from its seasonally moderate temperatures.

Vertical

On the other hand the geothermal model, which utilises boreholes at a depth of 30-100m, requires increased groundwork at a deeper level than the ground source’s horizontal system.
